Lorraine Burke January 4, 1919 – May 20, 2022 Passed peacefully away at the Placentia Hospital on May 20, 2022 Lorraine Burke of Long Harbour, Placentia Bay in her 104th year. Predeceased by her loving husband Cyril, 1998. Also predeceased by her parents James and Margaret Murphy, sisters: Druscilla and Imelda; brothers: Peter, William, Albert, Denis, Philip, Randolph, Leonard, and Walter; sisters-in-law: Mary Ann (Burke) Keating and Elizabeth (Burke) Murphy; brothers-in-law: Michael, Denis, John, Edward and Andrew; son-in-law James Norman. Ever loved by children: Lyla (Ray) Keating, Leah Burke-Norman, Ralph (deceased), Peggy (deceased); grandchildren: Steven Keating (Cecilia), Josh Keating (Laura), Nikita Norman (Patrick Fowler), Amber Norman (Garrett Buurke) and Samantha Power; 8 great grandchildren; and a large number of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Lorraine and Cyril were married on Crawley’s Island, Long Harbour, Placentia Bay in January 1945. Their only child was stillborn, however she and Cyril choose to raise, love and give an amazing life to four other children. Two were her niece and nephew Lyla and Ralph. After her sister Imelda died when Lyla was 20 months old and Ralph was 4 they took them into their home and became their second Mom and Dad. Later they decided they wanted to add to their family circle and adopted a daughter, Leah, and two years later another daughter, Peggy. We are forever grateful for the love and care they always bestowed on us. Lorraine worked in her younger years.   Cyril Joseph Barron January 16, 1944 – May 19, 2022 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a wonderful father, grandfather, father in law, brother, uncle and friend. Cyril passed away peacefully at the Josiah Squibb Memorial Pavilion in Carbonear surrounded by his loved ones. Preceded in Death are his parents Rose and John Barron, sister Aggie as well brothers Darry and Kevin. He has left behind son Chris (Sherry) and two grandchildren Megan and Shane. Brothers Jack, Bill, Ben, Jerry, Greg. Sisters Marion, Theresa, Doreen, Debbie and Tiny. Many nieces and nephews and a special friend Marg Jackson. Cyril was a very hard worker and provided well for his family. He loved his job at the Whitbourne Youth Center where he worked for over 30 years. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren and family. Cyril enjoyed the simple things in life. He loved going for his summer drive to Nova Scotia to visit his sisters Debbie and Theresa. He enjoyed a good flea market, funny movie and good plate of fries and gravy with a burger. Cremation has taken place. There will be a private family gathering in his name at Holloways Funeral Home on Monday, May 23,2022  from  12:00-2:00 pm. Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm at the Funeral Home. DOROTHY WINNIFRED WHITE November 18, 1927 to May 18, 2022 Passed peacefully away at her home on May 18, 2022, Dorothy (Dos) White (nee Gilbert) of Whitbourne, age 94 years. Predeceased by her husband Graham, sisters Margaret Barrett, Gladys Ash and May Ivany. Leaving behind to celebrate her life are her children Reg (Betty), Ron (Alice), Phyllis, Dave (Norma), Beverley and Ken (Deanne), her sister, Isabelle and her brothers George (Yvonne) and Fred (Sylvia), her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends and her special home care worker, Karen Penney. Resting at Holloways Funeral Home, Whitbourne with visitation on Friday, May 20, from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. A service of celebration and remembrance for Dorothy will take place on Saturday, May 21, 2022 at 2 pm at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, Whitbourne, with interment to follow at the Anglican Cemetery, Whitbourne. Masks will be required at the funeral home and church service. No flowers by request. Donations in Dorothy’s memory may be made to the Newfoundland and Labrador Diabetes Association. “You can shed a tear that she is gone, or you can smile because she lived.”

SMITH, Mary Alice,  Passed peacefully away at the Placentia Health Centre on April 27, 2022 Mary Smith of Norman’s Cove at the age of 85. A wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great-grandmother. Beautiful lady with a heart of gold. Known and  loved by all. Well known in the  community for her garden, her generosity, and her bread.  She opened her home, her arms and heart to many. Family meant everything to her. It didn’t matter if you were blood related or not, she accepted you and loved you as her own. She will leave an empty space in the hearts of many. Predeceased by her husband, Eldridge G. Smith, parents; Nathanial and Jane Newhook, siblings;  William Newhook and Clarence Newhook. Leaving behind  brothers; Wince & Evelyn Newhook: John & Virginia Newhook, sisters; Marcie & Harvey Piercey. Children: Berdina  & Carl Smith, Laurence & Tammy Smith; Andrew Smith; Scott & Susan Smith. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of the matriarch of the Temple family, a dear wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Martha Doris (Dos) Temple (December 5th, 1937) who passed peacefully away at her home on Thursday, April 21st at 4:10 am. surrounded by her loving family. Predeceased by her parents, Robert and Matilda Newhook, parents-in-law, Arthur and Dorcas Temple, son-in-law Kevin, brothers-in-law Levi, Cyril, and Jacob, and sisters-in-law Judy, Julie, and Pearl. Lovingly remembered and forever missed by her husband and best friend of 68 years, Clement Temple; her eight loving children, Christine, Robert (Velma), Janice, Lois (Rick), Judy (Keith), Roger (Cathy), Wesley (Wanda), and Jody (Nora); her 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, her two brothers, Wesley (Rosland) Newhook and Alf Newhook, sister in laws Marion White and Elsie Temple, as well as a large number of relatives and friends. The family would like to thank her amazing homecare workers Joanne Smith and Jacqui Crittenden, who quickly became part of our family.  We would also like to send a special thanks to Robyn from Eastern Health for all of her support. Cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2022 at 12pm at Holloways Funeral Home in Whitbourne.  Immediately following, a celebration of her life will be held at Norman’s Cove Community Centre beginning at 2pm and is open for all family and friends to attend. She is leaving her family deeply saddened with a void that can never be filled.

Victor Harrison Smith. September 22, 1938- April 4, 2022. Passed peacefully away after a brief illness at the Health Science Center on April 4, 2022 Victor Harrison Smith age 83 years. Predeceased by parents Obediah and Elizabeth Maude (Reid) Smith. Brothers, Reginald Smith, Andrew LeRoy Smith, sister;  Geneva Reid, sister-in-law, Joyce Smith, brothers-in-law, Charles Cumby, Ronald Elgar, and nephew Reginald Smith. Emily Gosse January 10, 1947-March 29, 2022 It is with great sadness that the family of Emily Gosse (née Gilbert) of Whitbourne announce her peaceful passing on March 29th. 2022 at W.H. Newhook Community Health Centre in Whitbourne. She was born in Haystack, Placentia Bay, and was the daughter of George and Susie (née Barrett) Gilbert. Leaving to mourn are her loving husband and best friend of 53 years Graham, brother William Gilbert of Blaketown, sister Pagie Hickman of Tecopa, California, sons Graham Jr. (Lora) of Wilmot, NS, Craig (Tammy) of Blackfoot, AB, daughter Lisa Penney (Jay) of St. John’s, Grandchildren Daniel (Caelum), Katelyn (Connor), Taylor (Jill), Nic (Hanna), Brianna (Kyle), Brandon, Myles, and Lillian, Great-Grandchildren Maliyah, Xavier, and Kaynen along with numerous nieces, nephews, family, and friends. She was predeceased by her parents. Emily spent many years working at Markland Cottage Hospital as a Nursing Assistant and later in life at the Mini Mart on the corner of Brigus Road and the “back road’ in Whitbourne. She loved to crochet, cook Sunday dinner for her family, and tend to her flowers and plants. She will be fondly remembered and missed by all those that knew and loved her. She will forever be in our hearts. Arrangements entrusted to Holloway’s Funeral Home.
