Gladys Burke

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Gladys Mary Burke of Long Harbour, who passed peacefully away in her home on 20 May 2017 surrounded by the love and care of her children.  Gladys was predeceased by her parents, Mary King and  Thomas Murphy, her 8 siblings of whom she was the youngest, her daughter in-law Teeta, her grandson Cory and her darling husband Jack.  She will be dearly missed by her adoring children: Sandra (Mike), Lester (Juanita), Geri (Ray), Gloria, Bruce (Faith), Wally (Penny), Jacqui, Elizabeth (Phil), Tess (Al), Chantelle (Andy), her 16 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren, and her little cat Lupin.

Gladys was born on Crawley’s Island (1927) to Mary and George Murphy who cherished her and taught her the kindness and generosity that was her character.  She met Jack Burke from Long Harbour and fell in love.  They were married for 61 years before he passed away.   He built her a home that he made wind worthy and strong and together they reinforced it with love and laughter.  She doted on the boys and stayed up late and laughed with the girls.  Her house was always open to friends.  Some stayed for nights, some for just for a chat, some to bring flowers but they all left knowing she cared and no one left hungry.  Some even left with “a bit of money”.   Gladys was a maker of all things.  She sewed, knit, baked and tended a beautiful garden that she took great pride in. She was renowned for her cooking, with her fearless use of butter and salt that contributed the finest jigs dinner you’ll ever taste. At Christmas, she made the feasts, encouraged the singing and never let us forget the importance of thanking God for our blessings.    Her constant faith gave her strength and an inner peace, and the ability to cope with loss and sickness.

She was a remarkable woman who will be missed by many. A very sincere thank you to all her “best friends” for visiting her, helping her and loving her through the years.  A heartfelt thanks to Dr. Stephanie Squibb for her care and professionalism and for always being there for Gladys and Jack. We’d also like to thank Robin Alcock the community nurse who was invaluable during her end of life care at home.

Gladys will be waked at Holloway’s Funeral Home in Whitbourne on Monday, 22 May (2 – 7 PM) and Tuesday, 23 May (2 – 4 PM).  She will also be waked at the church in Long Harbour on Tuesday, 23 May (7 – 9 PM). Her funeral service will take place at 12 pm on Wednesday, May 24 in Long Harbour.  Cremation to follow. Inurnment  at Long  Harbour at a later date.

Gladys loved flowers, so you can send flowers or you can make a donation to St. Francis Xavier Parish, Long Harbour.
