MICHAEL GERARD HEFFERAN January 14, 1953 – September 16, 2024 Passed peacefully away at Carbonear Hospital in the wee hours of September 16, 2024 Michael Gerard Hefferan (Mike), age 71 years. Predeceased by his loving parents Leo and Agnes Hefferan; his sisters Mary Gardner and brother in law Earl; Barbara Rouleau and brother in law Ray; sister in law Margo Hefferan. Leaving to mourn this great loss are his sisters Geraldine (Kevin) Murphy of Oshawa, Ontario; Carmel (Elwin) Warren of Chapel Arm; Brother Leo Hefferan of Bellevue Beach as well as a grand circle of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Cremation has taken place. Funeral service to be held at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church Bellevue on October 4, 2024 at 11am with interment to follow at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Cemetery in Bellevue. Reception to follow at Bellevue Community Hall. Deborah (Debbie) Lee Smith

Deborah (Debbie ) Lee Smith May 3, 1979 – September 13, 2024 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved daughter, sister, mother, aunt, niece and friend. Deborah (Debbie) Lee Smith of Norman’s Cove passed suddenly and unexpectedly on September 13, 2024 at the age of 45 years. Debbie is predeceased by her maternal grandparents, Ronald Drover and Greta Drover; paternal grandparents, Cyril Smith and Evelyn Smith; father, Wallace Smith; son, Caleb Smith; and brother-in-law, Jody Mason. Leaving to mourn with broken hearts are her loving mother, Ada Smith; sisters, Karen Smith (Stan) and Cavell Smith-Mason (Dean); children, Kesha Smith and Brandon Smith; niece, Janelle Smith-Tulloch; special friend, Brian Reid; a large circle of aunts, uncles and cousins; and a small circle of treasured friends. Debbie’s children were her pride and joy, and she loved nothing more than to spend time with them. While she struggled with her physical and mental health these last few years, Debbie had a heart of gold. Those who knew her, knew that she was a kind, caring soul and she would do anything she could to help others. We would like to say a special thank you to all of the first responders that came so quickly and did everything they could to help. Their efforts and kindness have immeasurable appreciation. We also want to thank Gary and Ruby with Holloway’s Funeral Home for their compassion and their help at such a difficult time. Roderick ”Dean” Reid

Roderick ”Dean” Reid April 28, 1966 – August 25, 2024 It is with broken hearts we announce the tragic passing of Dean, our beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend. Predeceased by his parents Harry and Eileen Reid, sister Dorothy, and nephew Joshua. Leaving to mourn with precious memories his wife, love of his life, and best friend, Trudy; sons Jordan and Dylan (Carly); parents-in-law Andy and Hilda; sister-in-law Andrea (KG); brothers Barry (Vivian), Keith (Jamie), Bill (Donna), Don (Patsy), Curtis, Chris (Sue), Paul (Andrea); sisters Jocelyn (Pete), Minnie (Dennis), Pauline (Angus); numerous nieces, nephews, and too many friends to count. To know Dean was to love him. He was a friend to everyone and an enemy to none. Dean was the life of the party and loved trouting and hunting, but his favorite pleasure by far was spending time with his family and friends. As per Dean’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Catherine (Kitty ) Power

Passed peacefully away in her 93rd year, surrounded by loving family, Catherine (Kitty) Power was welcomed into her heavenly home on Sunday, August 18th. Her heart now reunited with her husband Dave with whom they had enjoyed 52 years of married life, along with all the lovingly remembered members of the Burke & Power families. Predeceased by her siblings, Jack (Monica) Burke, Leo Burke, Margaret (Bill) Hayes, Agnes (Kevin) Foley, brothers-in-law, Jack (Clarice) Power and Tom Murphy. Survived by her brother, Tom (Suze) Burke, sister, Lucy Murphy, brother-in-law Tom (Fely) Power, and sister-in-law Mercedes Burke. Leaving to mourn with wonderful, loving memories are her children: Elaine (Gregory) Anderson, David (Sheila) Power, Randy Power, Patricia (Chris) Pike, Perry (Glenda) Power; grandchildren: Jordan Anderson, Justin Anderson, Shannon Power (Sam Hooper), Ashley (Greg) Moore, Bradley (Laura) Power, Samantha Power, Krysta (Matthew) Sutton, Catherine (John) Purchase; 7 great-grandchildren: Ava, Jacob, Lyla, Gavin, Carter, Alec, Jack, and another soon to make his debut; along with a large circle of relatives and friends. For the care and attention provided by the medical staff and workers at the Lions’ Manor, Placentia, where she was residing for several months, the family is deeply appreciative. Special thanks to Father Jose Joaquin for tending to her spiritual needs leading up to her passing. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Holloway’s Funeral Services, Whitbourne. Visitation will take place as St. Jerome’s Church, Long Harbour, on Thursday, August 22nd, from 10:00am to 1:00pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the church at 2:00pm with Father Jerome Hann presiding. Internment to take place following mass at St. Jerome’s Cemetery, Long Harbour. Reception to follow at the Town Hall, Long Harbour. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations may be made to an organization of one’s choice.  

Kenneth James Culleton

Kenneth James Culleton January 25, 1949 – August 18, 2024 Passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 18, 2024, at the Josiah Squibb Pavilion home in Carbonear, at the age of 75. Left to mourn are his wife, Virginia; daughters Tonya (Stephen) and Stacey (Jason); son Chris (Jennifer); special little son Martel; and his grandchildren. He is also survived by a large circle of former foster children and friends especially his card buddy’s. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude for the love, kindness, and compassion provided by the staff of Private Josiah Squibb Memorial Pavilion. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at Holloway’s Funeral Home in Whitbourne on Friday, August 23, from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A small private service for family and close friends will follow Saturday August 24th time to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ken’s memory may be made to St. Alphonsus Cemetery.

Thomas Mark Hickey

  It is with great sadness and broken hearts that we announce the passing of a loving husband, father, brother, brother in-law and uncle. Thomas Mark Hickey July 20th, 1946 – July 16th, 2024 Predeceased by father Leonard Hickey, mother Margaret Hickey, sisters Josephine, Cecilia, Rosella, brothers Leonard, Patrick, father in-law Robert Mercer, brother in-law Oral Newhook, niece Kerri-lee Newhook and nephew Jason Mercer Leaving to mourn with heavy hearts his wife of 28 years Lisa (Mercer), sons Mark (Tammy), Chris (Harley), William (Vincent). Brother Francis Hayes, sister Marcella (Doreen). Mother in-law Elise Mercer, sister in-law Debbie (Art), Ivey, brother in-law Eugene, Ross (Carolyn), Rodney (Pauline). Also a large circle of nephews and nieces, whom he adored. Also leaving to mourn a large circle of work family and friends from the Whitbourne Youth Center, where Tom worked for almost 35 years. Tom was a kind and gentle man who enjoyed his music and dance with family and friends. He will be forever in our hearts. Malcolm Edward (Eddy) Reid

July 30, 1953 to July 2, 2024 Malcolm Edward (Eddy) Reid   It is with sadness we announce the passing of our father Eddy Reid.   Eddy is predeceased by his spouse Shirley (nee Phillips) and his parents Mary and Rueben Reid and Sisters Christine and Doris, brother in law David Jackman, nephew Darren Piercey.   Leaving behind his children Justin (Jessica, nee Higdon) and Justine (Gary Williams), Grandchildren Andrew, Elizabeth, Sadie, and Elsie. Siblings, Marie (Colin) Grimes, Pearce (Shelia), Gilbert (Joan), Wade ( Cheryl ), Bernice (Robert) Piercey, Martha (Morris) Thorne, Rueben Jr. (Violet), brother-in-law Lloyd Garland, and numerous nieces, nephews, great- nieces and great-nephews and a circle of friends.   His children were his light and his grandchildren his reason for life. He loved to fish, moose hunt, and have a good trip up to the Steady’s.   Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Holloway’s Funeral Home in Whitbourne.   Cremation has taken place.   As we say goodbye to our beloved dad and poppy, we invite our family and friends to come together to celebrate his life and the impact he had on us. Rosalie (Rose) Ruth Smith-Peddle-Hillier

Rosalie (Rose) Ruth Smith – Peddle – Hillier Beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2024, at the age of 82. Rose was born in Tilton, Newfoundland, and raised in Dildo with her family. She embarked on her teaching career at the young age of 16, serving the areas of Chapel Arm, Greens Harbour, Blaketown, and Markland from 1958-1965. Rosalie married Reginald Peddle in 1965 and settled in the town of Whitbourne, where she dedicated herself to supporting her husband and his trucking career and raising their son while working at Woodman’s Fish Plant. After raising her son, she returned to school and pursued training as a Student Aide in 1990. She found great joy in helping children, and praising their accomplishments to all who would listen. In 1999, she mourned the loss of her husband, Reginald, after his long battle with cancer. In 2005, she married Hughie Hillier, whom she cherished deeply and they shared 19 years of loving companionship. Rose found solace and inspiration in reading her Bible, living as a devout Christian who offered encouragement to all who crossed her path. She maintained an extensive prayer list for family, friends, and those in need, and generously supported charities, especially those benefiting children. Rose is survived by her loving husband of 19 years, Hughie; her son, Rick (Katherine); stepchildren, Stephen (Janice), Tina (Steve), Sally (Stephen), and Mark (Tracy); seven grandchildren: Ryan, Ashley, Claudia, Leah, Ethan, Samuel, and Joel; Great-Grandson Greyson; her brother, Howard (Judy) Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Reginald Peddle, and her parents, James and Ida May Smith. Elizabeth (Bessie) Dora Newhook

Elizabeth (Bessie) Dora Newhook With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Elizabeth (Bessie) Dora Newhook, aged 94, at Carbonear General Hospital on Sunday, June 16, 2024. Bessie, a cherished resident of Norman’s Cove, was the beloved matriarch who bound our family with her love and warmth. Predeceased by her loving husband, Hayward; her son, Perry; grandson, Christopher; sisters, Joanne, Eileen, Beatrice; brother, Bill; and numerous in-laws, Bessie’s absence leaves a void that will be deeply felt. She leaves behind a legacy of love with her children: Charlotte (Merrill), Bern (Denise), Norma (Barry), Kay (Rick), and daughter-in-law Cindy. She was a proud grandmother to 10 grandchildren,  8 great-grandchildren and  2 great-great-grandchildren; Sisters Iris, Sylvia, Brothers Ed (Bonnie), Doug (Barb). Each of them carries a piece of her heart and the many memories she created with them. Our heartfelt gratitude extends to the dedicated staff of the 6th floor and the emergency department at Carbonear General Hospital. A special thank you to her granddaughter and home care worker of 9 years, Tiffanie, whose exceptional care and compassion meant the world to Bessie. Mom called her “her guardian angel”. Bessie was truly the heart of our family. She loved the outdoors and found joy in gardening, trouting, and campfires. Her hands were rarely still, always quilting or knitting beautiful pieces that warmed us all. Family celebrations were her favorite, and she cherished sharing memories over a good cup of tea. In her later years, she found peace in watching the birds from her window and playing solitaire on her tablet. Theresa Jarvis

Passed peacefully away at the Carbonear General Hospital on Friday, June 14, 2024,Theresa Jarvis of Fair Haven, aged 103 years.    She is predeceased by her husband John, sons Herbert and Clarence, daughter Florence, son in law Bill, daughter in law Edna, sister Ethel and step brother Cecil.   Leaving to mourn with cherished memories are her children, Wally(Phyllis), Ethel, Jessie (Tom), Gordon (Doris), Norman (Frances), Hilda (Terry), Carol (Doug), 23 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, 15 great great grandchildren and special friend Gertie Jarvis.   We would like to thank the staff of the 6th floor and Emergency Department of the Carbonear General Hospital for their exceptional care in her final days. We would like to express a heartfelt thank you to her homecare worker of 6 ½ years, Rona Reid, for her outstanding care and compassion to mom.  Also, her former homecare worker, Beatrice Reid, for her excellent care of mom.    Visitation will take place on Monday, June 17 from 2-4 and 7-9 at St. Paul’s By the Sea, United Church, Fair Haven. A celebration of Theresa’s life will take place on Tuesday, June 18 at 2:00 pm from St. Paul’s By the Sea, United Church, Fair Haven. Interment to follow at the Salvation Army Cemetery, Fair Haven.    Flowers graciously accepted.
