It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Cecil A. King of Long Harbour on Wednesday, April 12, 2023, in his 78th year. Predeceased by his loving wife of 57 years Aggie, his son Joey, his parents Joseph & Sarah Ellen King, his 8 brothers (Leo, Clarence, William, Anslem, Jim, Joe, Pete, and baby Elijah) & 3 sisters (Bride, Lizzy, and Catherine), and his dear friend Carol. Cecil has left behind his beloved sisters Celine and Agnes (Ron), and children Ella (Walt), Wanda (John), Cecil (Janet), and Sherry (Chris). His 8 grandchildren Paul (Kim), Jolene (Curt), Stacey (Veronica), Todd (Megan), Cheryl (John), Matt (Amy), Megan, Shane (Sara), and his 3 great-grandchildren Cadence, Michael & Carter. His brother-in-law Joe (Sharon), sister-in-law Marie, special nephews Bern (Doll) and Wayne (Cindy), his special companion Barb and good friend Dick O’Ree. Cecil married the love of his life, Aggie in the year of 1962. Together they raised 5 wonderful children. Cecil loved spending his time in the outdoors hunting and cutting wood. He was a hardworking man despite losing his left arm at the age of 20. Aggie then became his left arm and together they went on to live a happy life. They built and enjoyed their cottage in Holiday Hill. Over the years Cecil was a very successful man and started his own company Magtek in 1991, which is now passed down to his devoted son Cecil Jr. Visitation at Holloway’s Funeral Home, Friday 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Jones Amelia “Millie” Jane October 29, 1921-March 21,2023 Our loss is heavens gain when our precious Mother passed away at age 101. She was predeceased by her husband; Frederick Sinclear Jones, and her loving daughter Mary Joyce Cooze. Sisters; Joyce Nealy, Mary Hall, Bessie Driscoll, Dorothy Wells. Brother; Frank Evans. Parents; James and Martha Evans. Left to mourn with fond and loving memories are her four beloved daughters; Carolyn (Ray) McEwan, Marina (Wally) Parsons, Elizabeth (Reg) Hill, Sandra (Randy) Howe. Her loving son; Frank (Marie) Jones. 14 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 5 great great-grandchildren. Plus a large circle of friends and her beloved church family. She was a very loving and caring mother who always put her family first. “We will miss you mom, more than words can say.” Special thank you to the wonderful staff for going out of their way to make mom comfortable and treating her like family during her stay at the Lions Manor Nursing Home in Placentia. Bernard Neil Spurrell (Formerly of Whitbourne) June 20, 1950 – March 16, 2023 Neil passed peacefully away in the presence of his family at JPMH in Gander on Thursday, March 16, 2023. Predeceased by Parents Mildred and Howard Spurrell of Whitbourne. Left with special memories are siblings Andrea (Herb), Cupids, John (Cathy), Gander, Carl, Mackinsons, Lynn, Whitbourne, Margot (Roger) Carbonear, and Heather, Mission, BC as well as a number of nieces and nephews and dear family friend Beverley Collins, Whitbourne. Very special thanks to all of his caregivers especially Myra and Boyd Hicks with whom he resided for more than 30 years. Neil was treated like family in their home. Arrangements entrusted to Holloways Funeral Home, Whitbourne, NL A private funeral service has been arranged. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Neil’s memory to the Janeway Children’s Hospital.

Aaron Drover Mercer 1947-2023 Aaron Drover Mercer passed peacefully away surrounded by his family on March 15, 2023, at the age of 75. He is predeceased by his mother and father, Joseph and Isabelle Mercer of Blaketown. Parents- in-law, Absalom and Ruby Newhook of Norman’s Cove. His brothers and sisters-in-law, Aiden Mercer (Silvia), Eric Mercer (Betty) and Jennie Enwood. His sisters and brothers-in-law, Dorothy Baldwin (Bill), Edith Williams (Ernest), Jean Antle, Beulah Worthman (Ralph), and Howard Newhook. Leaving to mourn, his devoted and loving wife of 55 years, Linda Mercer. His four children, John Mercer (Corina), Neil Mercer (Judy), Juanita Mercer (Ray) Mark Mercer (Sherry). Ten grandchildren, Sheldon (Melissa), Christopher, Robyn (Jody), Jonathan (Kate), Laura, Brooke (Derrick), Angie (Tommy), Mitchell (Victoria), Philip, Sarah (Quinten). Seven great- grandchildren, Landon, Jaxon, Rayna, Noah, Tristan, Conor and baby Power. MERCER, ELDRED NORMAN (Junior) August 2, 1940- March 1, 2023 It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our dear husband, father and grandfather Eldred Norman (Junior) Mercer aged 82 of Whitbourne. Predeceased by parents Norman and Florence Mercer, son Michael who died as an infant, brother Lloyd, sister Rosalind and brothers-in-law Roy and Noel. Leaving to mourn his loving wife of 57 years Nora, children Paul (Philly), Lynn Ann, Heather (Darryl Osborne), granddaughters Rachel and Erica of Halifax. He will be sadly missed by sisters Norma, Audrey (Lloyd Adams), Marty (Neil Hillier), sisters-in-law Enid (Howard Richards) and Sandra, numerous nephews and nieces, as well as his many friends. Junior made friends wherever he went, no matter the place he always found someone to talk to. He loved many things but above all he cherished his family. Junior was always willing to lend a hand and help others. In his honour, in lieu of flowers, his family ask that you do a good deed for someone else. Cremation has taken place. Jordan Robert John Pitcher Dec. 29, 2002 – Feb. 22, 2023 With heavy hearts we regret to announce the passing of our beloved Jordan who died suddenly in London, Ontario at the tender age of 20. Leaving fond and loving memories he will be forever missed by his parents Nickie Shanks/Jason Temple and Robert Pitcher/Kerry Jarvis. Brother Tyler, Sister Makenna. Companion Maimoona Osman (daughter Maliyah). Stepsisters Emily, Hailey & Rachel Temple, stepbrothers Troy & Parker Jarvis. Grandparents Rose Shanks/Keith Lawrence, Bill & Karen Pitcher, Great Grandfather Robert Thorne, Great Grandmother Gladys Pitcher. Step Grandparents Gorman & Marilyn Temple. Also a large circle of special Aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and his wrestling family. Jordan’s kind and loving nature captured the hearts of all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He was truly genuine with his thoughtfulness and respect of everyone he knew. He will be missed by many and forever hold a special place in our hearts. A memorial service will be held at The Good Shepherd Anglican Church in Norman’s Cove March 2 at 2:00 pm. A celebration of life will follow at the Community Centre in Norman’s Cove.
Anita Theresa Murphy ( nee King )
Passed peacefully away on February 18, 2023, at James Paton Memorial Regional Health Centre, surrounded by her loving husband of 72 years, Anthony, and their 9 children: Anita Theresa Murphy (nee King). She was 95 years old. Born on April 7, 1927, in Long Harbour, Anita was a loving mother to Trudy (Clyde Brown), Sharleen (Gerard Butler), Anthony, Nicholas (Julie), Craig (Clare), Karen (Christian Menard), James, Scott (Kim) and John (Dahlia). She adored her 24 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Predeceased by her granddaughter Lindsay, parents, James and Mary King, brothers Anthony and John and sisters Bride, Agatha, Catherine, Elizabeth, Gertrude, Mary, and Ann. Anita was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who planted the seeds of her love into all she met. She will be remembered for her dedication to her family, humor, and her kind and comforting approach to others. She loved to read, knit, and garden. She was our historian with a wonderful memory of her family’s history who remembered and celebrated all our birthdays and anniversaries with cards and phone calls. She was a bright light in our lives and will be dearly missed. Special thanks to the staff at Oram’s Birchview Manor where she spent her final years and to the staff who provided care at James Paton Memorial Regional Health Centre. The funeral will be held in Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Long Harbour on Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at 1pm. Visitation will take place at the church on Monday, February 20, from 2 – 4 pm and 7 – 9pm. Interment to follow in Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery. No flowers by request. HOSKINS, Larry (1954-2023) It is with profound sadness that our family announces the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Larry Frederick Hoskins which occurred on Thursday, February 2 2023. Born in New Harbour on February 23 1954 to the late Wilfred and Marie (Ross), predeceased by brothers Terry and Warrick, brother in law Gerald, parents in law William and Dorothy Baldwin, brother in law Albert and Phonse and sister in law Betty and Verna. Larry was married to his loving wife Linda (Baldwin) for 46 years and was a dedicated father and role model to Shawn and Joanne (Justin Budgell). He was always thrilled to spend time with his precious grandchildren; Cole (his Mom Angie), Reed, Rohen and Brie. Also leaving to mourn his loving family; sister Diane (Bill Sooley), Tammy (Tony Engle), brothers Doug (Alice), Keith (Jocelyn), sister in law Sheila, sister in law Yvonne (Randy Mercer), Brenda (Tony Moore), Kelly (Dennis Lundrigan). Brazil, Michael Francis (August 10, 1936 – January 30, 2023), originally of Spaniard’s Bay. Passed away peacefully at St. Patrick’s Mercy Home, Michael Francis Brazil aged 86 years. Predeceased by his infant daughter Genevieve; parents Corporal Matthew and Agnes (Delaney) Brazil; parents-in-law Jim and Kitty Lynch of Bellevue; brothers Gerald and Matt; sisters Cecilia, Margaret (Melvin Drover and Walter Brazil), Mary (Bill Pennell), and Clare (Harry Gregory); brothers-in-law Bill Ryan, William Lynch (Bridie), Andy Lynch; sister-in-law Philomena (Dave McCarthy), Jessie Lynch (wife of brother-in law Gerald) and Ron Lahey (husband of sister-in-law Theresa). Leaving to mourn are his wife Josephine (Lynch) of 59 years; son Angelo; daughters Michelle, Eileen (Mark Hebert), Ginette (Mark O’Neill), and Pauline (Luis Ayala); grandchildren Krista (Josh Keegan), Jordan, Liam, Ryan, Sarah, Maria, Matthew, Anna and Elise. Mike was a dedicated teacher, beginning his career in New York and continuing to teach in many communities throughout the island of Newfoundland, as well as in Wabush, Labrador. In 1986, he retired from the profession at Beaconsfield High School where he taught French. In 1983, he was proud to be presented the Croix de Guerre, on behalf of his late father, Corporal Matthew Brazil, for acts of bravery during World War I. Charity was at the heart of Mike’s existence. Lucas George Cyril Smith
With shattered hearts, the family of Lucas George Cyril Smith announce his passing on Saturday, January 21st, forever 28 years young, after a lengthy battle with mental illness. He will be deeply missed by his parents Ricky & Sharon Smith of South Dildo, his brother and sister he never had: Stephen & Jessica Smith, his nephew Everett who was the light of his life and a large circle of friends- especially Tyhesia Buckle & Melva Flynn who were more like family, and his person Chloe Henderson. Also leaving behind many Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins, including his cousin Ava Ke who meant the world to him. All of his pets will dearly miss him but most of all, his best canine companion Mabel. Lucas was a kind-hearted soul who loved everyone in his life so very deeply. All of the children in his life gravitated toward him and he had such an amazing bond with all of them- his face lit up whenever they were around. His love for animals and nature ran deep and beyond caring for his own “zoo” he loved to care for foster pets and spent countless hours volunteering to help animals in need as well. Lucas was a courageous advocate for mental health issues and for LGBTQ+ rights. He spoke openly about his journey and his struggles; his strength was inspiring to many. His sudden loss has been devastating to many as he touched more souls than he could ever know.
