Harriet Ann Rees (nee Gosse ) RN

  It is with great sadness that the family of Harriet Ann Rees (née Gosse) R.N., announce her passing on Friday, January 17, 2025, at the age of 72. Harriet will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 50 years, Lester; children, Lester (Treena), Lisa (Giles) and Gayle (David); grandchildren, Sarah, Christopher, Haley and Karla; step grandchildren Bradley, Andrew and Matthew; brother Robert (Anne) Gosse; sister-in-laws Gloria Gosse and Dolores (Robert) Barrett; brother-in-laws Irwin (Marilyn) Rees and Edgar Hamilton as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family. Harriet was predeceased by her parents, Cyril and Hattie Gosse; sisters Florence and Alice; brothers, Cyril, Raymond, David and Gordon; parents-in-law Harrison and Edith Rees; brother-in-law Aubrey Rees. Harriet will be missed by her long time nursing and medical team friends, quilting friends, and members of St John the Baptist Anglican Church. Special thank you to the General Hospital School of Nursing class of 74 with whom she recently celebrated their 50th reunion, Dr Slaney, Dr Ryan and the oncology team at the cancer clinic, Whitbourne public health as well as Greg Banfield, Pallative Care Consultant and Kim Sobtchouk, Community Health Nurse for their steadfast support in her final months. Visitation at Holloway’s Funeral Home, Whitbourne, on Wednesday January 22 from 7:00 to 9:00pm; Thursday Jan 23 from 2:00 – 4:00 pm & 7:00-9:00 pm; Friday January 24 from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm. Funeral Service to take place on Friday January 24 at 2:00 pm from St. John the Baptist Church, Whitbourne. Internment will be held at a later date. Graham Maxwell Gosse

Graham Maxwell Gosse July 2, 1945 – January 17, 2025 It is with deep sadness that the family of Graham Maxwell Gosse of Whitbourne announce the peaceful passing and loss of their beloved father on January 17, 2025 at the age of 79, at Carbonear General Hospital after a valiant battle with cancer. Born in Markland, Graham was the son of Harold Gosse of Whitbourne and Melina (née March) Gosse of Greens Harbour. Predeceased by Emily his wife of 53 years, Graham leaves to mourn his sisters Hazel Hobbs of Mount Pearl, Vida Kelland of Whitbourne, Alma (Richard) Kelly of Bay Roberts; brothers Lloyd (Peggy) Gosse of Bible Hill, NS, and Bill (Sylvia) Gosse of Chamberlains; brother-in-law William Gilbert of Blaketown; sister-in-law Pagie Hickman of Tecopa, California; and his children, Graham Jr. (Lora) Gosse of Wilmot, NS, Craig (Tammy) Gosse of Blackfoot, AB, and Lisa (Jay) Penney of Mount Pearl. He is also mourned by his grandchildren Daniel (Caelum), Katelyn (Connor), Taylor (Jill), Nic (Hanna), Brianna, Brandon, Myles, and Lillian, and great-grandchildren Maliyah, Xavier, Kaynen, Nora, and Willa, along with numerous nieces, nephews, family, and friends. Graham had a distinguished career with the provincial government, serving for over thirty years. He was also a dedicated member of the Whitbourne Volunteer Fire Department for many years. Passionate about the outdoors, Graham enjoyed going out the track trouting and berry picking with Emily. A true “jack of all trades,” he was known for taking the lead on household projects and DIY tasks. An avid carpenter, Graham spent countless hours in his workshop, creating pieces for his home, family, and friends. Kenneth (Melvin) Clarke

Melvin Kenneth Clarke, at the age of 71, passed away at the Dr. G B Cross Memorial Hospital in Clarenville on Wednesday January 15, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by family as he left this world for his heavenly home. Predeceased by his parents, Kenneth and Ivy Clarke, brother Ralph Clarke, Sister Edna, Niece Sherry Ann and Brother in-law Pleman Smith. Left to mourn with precious memories, his loving Wife Frances who remained by his side, Daughters Wanda (Rob), Melanie (Rob), Sons Jamie, Nelson (Valerie), Dennis(Stacey), Brothers Rex (Norma), Roy (Dorothy), Frank (Shirley), Donald and Jimmy. Eight grandchildren and one great grandchild, eight nieces and one special little girl (Sophia) whom loved her mugsy (as she called him} dearly. He was well loved by his extended family and friends. Melvin’s passion in life was the great outdoors, trouting, having a boil up by a pond, ski-doo runs and quad rides. MINNIE THORNE

Minnie Thorne (January 27, 1931 – January 14, 2025) Our loss is heaven’s gain when our precious Mother passed peacefully away at age 93, with her family by her side, at Carbonear General Hospital. She was predeceased by sons Baby John, Gordon Bruce, and Charles Edmund; her parents Ellis and Annie Tucker; her brothers Charles and James; her sister Carol; and precious granddaughter Melissa Thorne. Leaving to mourn with loving memories her sons Robert (Roberta), David (Doreen), Wilfred (Vicki), and daughters Elizabeth Briant (Bradley), Rosemary (Osvaldo Croci), and her sister Rosemary Moore (Robert). Also 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, plus a large circle of extended family, friends, and her beloved church family. She was a loving and caring mother who always put her family first. Mom was an accomplished visual artist and needlework artisan, and she loved flowers and plants. Special thank you to the wonderful staff for treating her like family during her stay at Shag Rock Manor, Whiteway, and all the nurses from the 5th and 6th floors at Carbonear General Hospital, including Alison Power, Ally, Mollie, Morgan and Lynnanne. MELBA JEAN REID

It is with heavy hearts we, the family of Melba Jean Reid, announce her passing on January 5th, 2025, at age 94. Melba passed away peacefully at the Lion’s Manor in Placentia surrounded by family and friends. Predeceased by her loving husband of 67 years Vern Reid. As well as daughter Valarie Reid. Parents Samuel and Marcey Mercer, parents in law Fred and Bessie Reid, siblings Robert Mercer (Eileen), Vinie Sellers (Harry), brothers in law Fred Reid, Ron Reid, Darrell Reid, Ray Gosse, Mac Drover, Nelson Harnum, and special nephew Wade Drover. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Darlene Moores (Rodney), granddaughters Candee Reid, Stacy Reid and Sammi-Jo Reid (Adam). Great grandchildren Billie Jean Reid, Cameron Reid, Morgan Keating, Damien Reid, and Tyler Pilgrim. Liz will be remembered for her kindness, humor and the love for her children, grandchildren, family and many lifelong friendships. Leaving to mourn her partner Craig Piercey, their cherished Pomeranian Peggy, her beloved children that were the center of her world whom she loved deeply Michael (Doreen), Betsy (Steve), Sean (Malissa), Jamie (Jaime), Grandchildren Brad, Mackenzie, Kalie, Jamie, Emilie, Alicia, Shayden,  Braydyn and Mae. It is with broken hearts we, the friends and family of Harvey Branton, announce his passing on December 31, 2024, at age 70. Predeceased by his parents, Caleb and Sarah Branton, his brothers, Ray, Doug and Eldridge Branton, and his sisters Viola Colbourne and Irene Boynton as well as his sister-in-law Doreen Branton. His brothers-in-law Ern Colbourne, Charlie Russel and John Antle and his mother-in-law Elsie Antle. Leaving to mourn is his loving and devoted wife Pauline, his three stepsons Donny (Lisa) Jarvis of Corner Brook, Christopher (Pam) Jarvis of BC and Chad (Nikki) Jarvis of Texas. His twelve grandchildren who he adored: Gabby, Nathan, Carter, Jillian, Tyson Harvey, Donny, Amelia, Riley, Ava, Jack, Luke and Levi. His sister Florence (Brendan) Lynch and his brothers Eric (Jocelyn) and Leslie. His sisters-in-law Grace Branton, Marilyn Branton, Laura Antle, Joanne Antle, Gail (Harry) Edwards, Brenda Antle and the extended Antle family. His brothers-in-law Bob Boynton and Ed (Valerie) Antle. Many nephews and nieces that he loved dearly. His special nephews Paul Colbourne, Warren (Rhoda) Branton and Glen (Juanita) Branton and their daughter, Dr. Sarah Branton, whom he was so very proud of. His special nieces: Susan Nicholl and all of Doug’s girls : Sharon, Gail, Denise and Patsy. MERRILL EDWARD POWER

Merrill Edward Power October 1, 1962 – December 22, 2024 It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Merrill Edward Power on December 22, 2024 at the age of 62. Leaving to mourn his loss, his loving wife of forty three year, Doris Power (Branton); and their three daughters Angela McNamara (Chris), Melissa Levitt (Daniel) and Holly Power, He was a proud papa to nine cherished grandchildren; Noah, Abby, Benjamin, Sarah, Adele, Lucas, Harmony, Aryan and Izzy. He will also be greatly missed by sisters Marina O’Flaherty, Deborah Butt (Albert), Beverly Penny (Ray), as well as only niece Lisa O’Flaherty, and Aunt Dos and Uncle Fred. Predeceased by his parents Edward and Elsie Power and his brother in-law Jamie O’Flaherty. He leaves behind a wide circle of many dear family members and friends from Newfoundland and Ontario. Merrill worked as a heavy equipment operator throughout his life, starting with the family’s business, Power’s Trucking and ending with Facca Inc. in Ontario. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Carbonear General Hospital and the Health Science Center for all their compassionate care during this difficult time. Visitation will take place on Tuesday January 7th 2025 at Holloway’s Funeral Home in Whitbourne, Newfoundland. A prayer will take place at 11:00 AM followed by visitation until 2:00 PM. Perry (Steward) Anderson

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Perry (Steward) Anderson, on November 10, 2024 at the age of 57. Leaving to mourn his loss, his loving mother June Dyke and Stepfather Bert Dyke and father Steward Anderson; brother Stirling Anderson, sister Nadine Schumont (Ron); sister Claudine Anderson (Mark); brother Lawrence Anderson; long time business partner and close friend Neil Rideout; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews and friends. Predeceased by grandparents Gladys and Walter Jones; Louise and Jim Anderson. Perry was a brilliant innovator and a true Renaissance man. With a degree in programming, he mastered 12 programming languages and 27 development platforms, collaborating with industry leaders at Matrix Technologies, Capital One, and more. His greatest achievements came through founding Unified Objects LLC and Exparx, Inc., where his visionary ideas pushed the boundaries of technology. A passionate advocate for open-source platforms like GitHub and SourceForge, Perry’s contributions shaped the modern tech landscape, leaving a profound impact on social media and financial systems. Despite his professional brilliance, Perry remained humble and kind, always making others feel valued. In his free time, he wrote prolifically, from his book Hammer Is a Word to technical papers on emerging technologies. A dedicated gamer, he built virtual empires in Second Life and formed lasting friendships in World of Warships. Perry’s legacy of innovation, generosity, and connection will forever inspire those fortunate enough to have known him. OLIVE MARJORIE HUSSEY

Passed peacefully away Dec. 8, 2024, Olive  Marjorie Hussey at the Miller Centre in St. John’s NL at the age of 96 years. Olive was born in Whitbourne, NL on July 22, 1928 to Caroline and William Kennedy. She is pre-deceased by her husband of 51 years, Robie Hussey. Olive leaves to mourn her children Ruth Fenton (Raymond – deceased), Randy Hussey (Yvonne), Carol Hussey (Jim), Stan Hussey (Dianne), Lisa Piercey (Ralph), and Neil Hussey (Dianne), as well as her cherished grandchildren Dustin, Brandy, Stacey, Lindsey, Suzanne, Heather, Shawn, Kyle, and Shane, and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of Olive’s life, a life well lived, will take place in 2025. Thank you to the wonderful staff at the Miller Centre for their compassion and care of our mother in her last days. Our heart-felt thanks also to the staff at the Karwood Retirement Retreat in Paradise where Mom lived for the past 9 years for all their kindness and care of Mom over those years, as well as to her many friends there.
