Obituary of Margaret Grace Luffman (nee Thorne)

March 26, 1940, New Harbour, NL February 2, 2020, Eastern Health Long Term Home Care, Carbonear, NL.

Grace Luffman peacefully passed away at the Carbonear Long Term Home on Sunday, Feb 2, 2020 at 1:00 am at the age of 79 years young. Surrounded by her loving family and friends, the wonderful staff at 3 North, we were blessed to have her with such a caring staff that made her feel like family.

Grace was born and raised in New Harbour, NL, met and married Herbert Luffman November 2, 1957 and resided there until 2010 when she moved to the Carbonear Long Term Care Facility.

Grace is predeceased by her loving husband, Herbert; children Christine and Wayne; and grandsons, Michael and Dillon; as well her parents, Herb and Ruth Thorne, siblings, Ida, Mary, Webb and Jim.

Grace is survived by her children Bruce, Keith (Barb), Sharon, Rodney, Brian (Helen), Kelly and Joan (Fred). As well as her nine beautiful grandchildren, Stephanie, Matthew L, Matthew P, Candace, Jennifer, Gabe, Katelynd, Chenelle, Miranda, also seven precious great grand children, Hayden, Mya, Michael, Parker, Rylie, Winston and Scarlett.

Grace is also survived by her six loving siblings, Blanch, Melve, Arbury, Roger, Dave and George.

Grace was deeply devoted to her family and would always do without to keep her family happy. She was also devoted to her extended family and friend, including her very special friend, Fanny. Our mom was a beautiful, kind hearted, gentle soul that we all loved and respected dearly. She was an angel sent from heaven for 79 years for us to love and cherish. We were very blessed for God to share her beautiful soul.

Visitation starts 6-9 pm on Monday, February 3, 2020 at Holloway’s Funeral Home in Whitbourne. Tuesday at 10 am – 9 pm, Funeral service is on Wednesday, February 5, 2020 at 2 pm at Whitbourne Anglican Church.

The family has requested no flowers, but any donations can be made and will be donated to the Janeway Children’s Hospital, St John’s, NL in Grace’s name.

Robert (Rob) James Clarke Jr.

It is with shattered hearts we announce the passing of Robert (Rob) James Clarke Jr of Whitbourne. Rob passed away peacefully in his home on the 25th of December after a courageous battle with cancer at 57 years of age. Surrounded by his Family and loving wife of 31 years, Lori (nee Cardwell) Rob slipped quietly away.

Rob is predeceased by his mother Agnes (nee Smith), his father in law Ernest Cardwell Sr. Left to mourn are his devoted loving soulmate and wife Lori as well as his children Carson, Brandon and Emily, who he was extremely proud of. Also his Father Robert Clarke Sr, sisters Valerie (John), Debra (Gary), Cindy (Gerry), Karen Linehan (Scott), Melanie and brothers Terry (Nancy) and Steven (Erica). In addition his mother in law Elizabeth (Betty) Cardwell, brother in law Ernie Cardwell Jr (Joanne), and Sisters in law Beverly Gosse (Calvin) and Arlene Jean (Marc). And Special friend Claudine. Rob was especially close with his Uncle Silas as well as numerous nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts extended family and an enormous circle of friends.

Rob, a devoted husband and dad, was a kind-hearted and gentle man who truly believed in Family above all else. A truly remarkable craftsman, Rob excelled as a carpenter, woodworker, painter and photographer. Rob was a mentor and coach to so many, never hesitating to share his knowledge or lend a helping hand to anyone in need. An avid outdoorsman, hunter, fisherman and gardener, Rob loved ‘The woods’ where he and Lori spent countless hours together. A tremendously peaceful soul, Rob will be eternally remembered as a glowing example of the paramount importance of Family.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be at Holloway’s Funeral Home in Whitbourne from 2:00 – 4:30 and 6:00-9:00 PM on Saturday Dec 28 and 2:00-4:30 and 6:00-9:00 PM on Sunday the 29th. The funeral service will be held at the Anglican Church in Whitbourne on Monday the 30th at 2 PM.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Robert Clarke Jr Memorial Fund.

Hallett Benjamin Jarvis

 

Hallett Benjamin Jarvis, Fair haven
It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, brother in law and uncle and a large circle of friends and other relatives. Hallett passed away peacefully at Carbonear Hospital December 10th 2019, 7 days after his 90th birthday. He was predeceased by his parents, Albert and Emily, brothers Lewellyn and George and sister Mary.

Leaving to morn the love of his life and wife of 65 years, Gertie (nee Crann); his daughter Beulah Macintyre (Bruce-deceased) and sons Earl and Harvey (Brenda). Grandchildren; Tanya, David, Matthew, Stephen and Preston; great grandchildren Nathan. Ally, Taylor, Cameron, Hope, Greenlee and Madelyn plus many other friends and relatives.

A special thanks to the staff at Carbonear Hospital for their care and compassion.

A celebration of Hallett’s life will be held at the community center at Fair Haven on Saturday, December 14th at 2 PM.

Instead of bringing flowers please make a donation to St. Paul’s by the Sea United Church at Fair Haven.

Gower Cecil Williams

 

Gower Cecil Williams (Sept 08, 1939- Dec 03, 2019.

With heavy hearts we regret to announce the passing of Gower Cecil Williams on Dec 03, 2019. Age 80 years. Gower passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the Carbonear General Hospital. Predeceased by beloved wife Leta, , Son Selby,  parents George and Pearl Williams, Sister Hilda, Brothers Wallace, Sam and Ren , Brother-in-Law George Mercer, parents-in-law Susie and Harold Mercer . Left to mourn with heavy hearts are his 3 children Cecil (Connie), John (Kelly), Sharon (Frankie), Grandkids Rae-Lynn, Logan, Marcus, Kaiden, Nikolas. Also a large number of extended family and friends. Gower loved being outdoors, spending time in the woods, doing his crossword books, listening to music and watching his favourite show family feud. The family would like to thank the doctors and nursing at Carbonear General Hospital. Resting at Holloway’s Funeral Home, Whitbourne. Visitation on Thursday, Dec. 5. 2019 from  10:00 am – 9:00 pm.  Friday, Dec 6,  from 10:00 am – 12:00 noon. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, Dec 6, 2019 at 3:00 pm  from the Salvation Army, New Harbour. Cremation to follow. No flowers by request of the family. Donations  in Gower’s memory can be made to the Gower Williams Memorial Fund.

Tobias William Murphy

MURPHY. Tobias William. Passed peacefully away at Newhook’s Clinic, Whitbourne Tobias William Murphy age 76 after a short battle with cancer.
Predeceased by son Toby, mother Elizabeth, father Gerald, brothers Bill and Johnny. Leaving to mourn son Paul, daughter Renee, mother of his children
Germaine. Granddaughters Kandance and Molly. Grandson Ryland. Brothers, Brian (Marg), Doug (Maxine), Basil (Loretta), Gary (Kathleen), Gerard (Colleen). Sister Ros, and a numerous number of nieces and nephews. Also a large circle of friends and extended family. Tobe worked as a heavy equipment
operator all his life and was greatly respected by his co-workers who would have a lot of stories to tell. At Tobe’s request cremation has taken place. Funeral mass to be held on Friday, December 6, 2019at 11:00 am from St. Francis Xavier Church, Long Harbour. No flowers by request. Donations may be made to the Bliss Murphy Cancer Foundation.

Eldridge Andrew Callan

Eldridge Andrew Callan (Nov 6, 1945 – Nov 28, 2019)

Passed peacefully away at the Health Science Centre Nov 28th, 2019. Predeceased by father Walter and mother Elsie. Left to mourn are his wife of 50 years Elizabeth, daughters Shelley (Ted), Cathy (John), son-in-law Jeff, four beautiful granddaughters Megan, Carley (Zac), Hailey & Mackenzie and step granddaughter Melina. Also loved and remembered by brothers, John (Lynda), Lew (Ivena), Harold (Barb), Wade (Joan), Cal (Josie), Derrick (Rita) and sisters Kathleen (Jim) & Alvina (Neil) and sister-in-law Cathy (Anthony) & brother-in-law Sandy (Wendy). Along with many loved nieces & nephews and a large circle of friends too large to list.

A special thanks to the nursing staff on the 4 South A & B for their amazing and dedicated care and to Dr. Tilley & Nurse Practitioner Carmel Collins who have shown us support and empathy throughout his battle with cancer.

Family visitation Monday morning, Dec 2nd at 10am – 12pm and public visitation Monday, Dec 2nd from 2-5pm and 7-9pm and Tuesday Dec 3rd from 10-11:30am at the Bethel United Church, Norman’s Cove. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2pm. In spirit of Eldridge who loved the colour red, we invite anyone who wishes to wear something red for the service.

A reception will be held after the service and we invite everyone to join us at the Community Centre.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Newfoundland Conservancy of Canada, 136 Crosbie Rd, St. John’s, NL. A1B 3K3  because of his love of the outdoors; or the charity of choice.

Ruby Charlotte Mercer

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Ruby Charlotte
Mercer (nee Thorne from New Harbour). Ruby passed away peacefully, surrounded by
family at Carbonear General Hospital on October 29th, 2019 at the age of 83.
She was predeceased by parents George and Mae Thorne, grandmother Melinda Thorne,
beloved husband of 58 years Emerson Mercer, son George Mercer, grandson Stephen
Hillier and son in law Harve Hillier.
Left to celebrate her life are daughters Maxine, Brenda, Lois (John), Sandra, Darlene,
Lorraine (Kevin) and son Don (Tina), 19 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, daughter-in-lawFlorence, and a large circle of extended family and friends.
Ruby was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was an avid reader, a
talented knitter and a long time member of the Ladies Orange Benevolent Association
(LOBA). Ruby loved being outdoors, camping, gardening and spending time on the beach.
She loved her cats and playing cards with family, but what brought her the most joy was
spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the nursing staff at Carbonear General Hospital for their
kindness and compassion in Ruby’s final days.
Resting at Holloway`s Funeral Home, Whitbourne. Visitation for family and friends to take
place from 1-9pm on Wednesday, Oct. 30th, 10am-9pm on Thursday, Oct. 31st and
10am-12pm on Friday, Nov. 1st.
Funeral Service will take place at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, Whitbourne at 2pm
on Friday, November 1st.
Gone, but forever in our hearts.

Terance (Terry) George Rose

 Terance ( Terry) George Rose
October 29, 1954- October 28, 2019
With heavy hearts we regret to announce the passing of Terance (Terry) George Rose on October 28, 2019, age 64 years.  Predeceased by his father, George, sister, Shelia and brother in law, Roger.
Leaving to mourn, the brightest light of his life, his wife Shona of 31 years. His four daughters, as he lovingly referred to as “his girls”, Terri Lynn (Todd), Jennifer ( Roben), Chantal (Brian) and Kaitlyn.
Five grandchildren, who were his pride and joy,  Ryan, Evan, Dylan, Isabelle and Layla. His mother, Anita and sister’s, Lorraine ( Gerry), Una ( Keith), brother, Dennis and brother in law, Frank.
His in laws, Carrie and Stewart and sister in law’s, Joanne ( Dean), Beverley, his nieces and nephews along with a large circle of close family and friends.
Terry found joy in the simple things in life;   He loved spending time with his family and friends and in the outdoors, especially fishing. He was a hard worker who dedicated over 30 years of service to NL Power and proudly continued his career as a business manager with the IBEW 1620.
We could not have asked for a better husband, father and son. He will be lovingly remembered by those who were fortunate to be a part of his life and he will remain forever in our hearts.
A special thank you is extended to Dr. Sean Murphy for his personal touch during this difficult time.

Beulah Rebecca Newhook (nee Pretty

Beulah Rebecca Newhook (nee Pretty) passed away at the Health Sciences Centre on October the 25th 2019, surrounded by her family.

It is with broken hearts that we say goodbye to our beautiful  Mom.

Beulah was predeceased by her beloved husband Garfield, sister Velma and her three brothers Rex, Gerald, and Ted.

Mom always had a beautiful smile that would light up the darkest room, and her love for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren was beyond measure. She always loved company, a game of crazy eights and relentlessly searched for corky in The Downhomer.

Mom  loved her visits with her lifelong friend Gladys Newhook, and their many, many phone conversations were filled with laughter.

Mom  was also blessed with another very special person in her life; Floss Newhook was like another daughter, and we cannot thank you enough for the many sleepovers, cooked dinners, delicious muffins and chats you would have with her. She loved you.

In recent years, Mom received outstanding care from wonderful caregivers, Joan Warren, Andrea Domine and Lorraine Pinsent. Thank you for your compassion, patience and love you showed for Mom.

Left to mourn with heavy hearts are her six children; Nellie (Bob) Smith, Ford (Kathy Newhook, Velma (Denzil) Warren, Ted (Winnie) Newhook, Cora (Robert) McKenzie, her baby girl Rebecca (Steven) Power, and sisters in law Francis Howell, Mildred Pretty and Edith Pretty.

Mom was blessed with thirteen grandchildren: Gerald, Andrea, Robbie, Nolan, Neil, Cody, Charles, Gary, Rebecca, James, Alexander, Joshua and Cameron, and 16 Great-Grandchildren: Emma, Nathan, Lucas, Nicholas, Amber, Caleb, Emma, Emily, Madison, Devon, Trinity, Braden, Austin, Shelby, Christopher, and Avery.

Resting at  The Good Shepherd Anglican Church, Norman’s Cove. Visitation Sunday. Oct. 27, 4:00 -6:00 and 7:00 – 9:00 pm. Monday 2:00 – 5:00 and  7:0 – 9:00 pm. Tuesday 10:00 am -12:00 noon. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 29 at 2:00 pm.

We will keep you close to our hearts forever; we love you to the Moon and back.

PIERCEY, Alfreda (Newhook)

Alfreda (Newhook) Piercey died peacefully on October 23rd at the Health Sciences Centre at the age of 80.

She is predeceased by parents Gordon and Sarah Jane (Peddle ) Newhook. Daughter Pansy Bernice; Sister; Irene Martin (Nelson), brother; Alphonsus (Elizabeth); Gerald (Marilyn).

She leaves to mourn her beloved Husband Wesley; and Her 4 children Donna Butt, Margaret Traverse (Chris), June Schappert (Rick) and Matthew Piercey (Carolyn) and her grandchildren Justin, Maggie, Matthew, Grant, Michael, Bradley and Eli. Her great grandchildren; Kayden, Taylor, and Colten. She leaves behind siblings Janet White (Cliff), Gordon (Maureen), Richard (Lucy), Dallas Peach (Calvin), Mark, Jane White (Bert), Herman (Hazel). And a large circle of extended family and friends.

Visitation for family will be held at Holloway’s Funeral Home in Whitbourne on October 24th from 7-9 pm. A funeral will be held in her honour at Normans Cove on Saturday, October 26th at 2 pm at Bethel United Church. Donations can be made in Alfreda’s memory to The Canadian Cancer Society.
