With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Elizabeth (Bessie) Dora Newhook, aged 94, at Carbonear General Hospital on Sunday, June 16, 2024. Bessie, a cherished resident of Norman’s Cove, was the beloved matriarch who bound our family with her love and warmth.
Predeceased by her loving husband, Hayward; her son, Perry; grandson, Christopher; sisters, Joanne, Eileen, Beatrice; brother, Bill; and numerous in-laws, Bessie’s absence leaves a void that will be deeply felt.
She leaves behind a legacy of love with her children: Charlotte (Merrill), Bern (Denise), Norma (Barry), Kay (Rick), and daughter-in-law Cindy. She was a proud grandmother to 10 grandchildren,  8 great-grandchildren and  2 great-great-grandchildren; Sisters Iris, Sylvia, Brothers Ed (Bonnie), Doug (Barb). Each of them carries a piece of her heart and the many memories she created with them.
Our heartfelt gratitude extends to the dedicated staff of the 6th floor and the emergency department at Carbonear General Hospital. A special thank you to her granddaughter and home care worker of 9 years, Tiffanie, whose exceptional care and compassion meant the world to Bessie. Mom called her “her guardian angel”.
Bessie was truly the heart of our family. She loved the outdoors and found joy in gardening, trouting, and campfires. Her hands were rarely still, always quilting or knitting beautiful pieces that warmed us all. Family celebrations were her favorite, and she cherished sharing memories over a good cup of tea. In her later years, she found peace in watching the birds from her window and playing solitaire on her tablet.
Visitation will be held at Holloway’s Funeral Home, Whitbourne on Monday, June 17th from 2-9 p.m. We will celebrate her life with a funeral service on Wednesday, June 19th at 2 p.m. at Good Shepherd Anglican Church in Norman’s Cove, followed by her interment at the Anglican Cemetery.
Donations in Bessie’s memory can be made to the Good Shepherd Church, continuing her legacy of kindness and community spirit.
