Rosalie (Rose) Ruth Smith-Peddle-Hillier

Rosalie (Rose) Ruth Smith – Peddle – Hillier

Beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2024, at the age of 82.

Rose was born in Tilton, Newfoundland, and raised in Dildo with her family. She embarked on her teaching career at the young age of 16, serving the areas of Chapel Arm, Greens Harbour, Blaketown, and Markland from 1958-1965. Rosalie married Reginald Peddle in 1965 and settled in the town of Whitbourne, where she dedicated herself to supporting her husband and his trucking career and raising their son while working at Woodman’s Fish Plant. After raising her son, she returned to school and pursued training as a Student Aide in 1990. She found great joy in helping children, and praising their accomplishments to all who would listen. In 1999, she mourned the loss of her husband, Reginald, after his long battle with cancer. In 2005, she married Hughie Hillier, whom she cherished deeply and they shared 19 years of loving companionship.

Rose found solace and inspiration in reading her Bible, living as a devout Christian who offered encouragement to all who crossed her path. She maintained an extensive prayer list for family, friends, and those in need, and generously supported charities, especially those benefiting children.

Rose is survived by her loving husband of 19 years, Hughie; her son, Rick (Katherine); stepchildren, Stephen (Janice), Tina (Steve), Sally (Stephen), and Mark (Tracy); seven grandchildren: Ryan, Ashley, Claudia, Leah, Ethan, Samuel, and Joel; Great-Grandson Greyson; her brother, Howard (Judy) Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Reginald Peddle, and her parents, James and Ida May Smith.

Visitation will be held at Holloway’s Funeral Home in Whitbourne on Sunday, June 30, 2024, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. A private family service will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in Rose’s memory to her chosen charity at www.operationsmile.ca.

Rose will be remembered for her kindness, unwavering love for her family, and her gentle, encouraging spirit that brightened the lives of everyone she touched. Her legacy of compassion and generosity will continue to inspire those fortunate enough to have known her.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Private Josiah Squibb Memorial Pavilion for the compassionate care they provided over the last 8 months. Rose frequently expressed appreciation for the kindness and dedication of her caregivers.
Additionally, we are deeply thankful to Holloway’s Funeral Home for their empathy and their efficient service, which provided comfort and support during this challenging time.
