Alvin Eric Thorne

Alvin Eric Thorne, son, husband, father, fisherman, and lifelong resident of Thornlea, passed tragically and unexpectedly away on August 15, 2022 at the age of 57.
Alvin is survived by his wife, Christine, daughters Amber-Lynn and Taylor, his brothers Henry (Renee) and Jim (Shelley), sister Genevieve (Wayne), and parents Eric and Phoebe. He is predeceased by his son, Tyler, with whom he is reunited in heavenly rest.
Alvin was born in Markland on May 29, 1965. He learned to fish at an early age from his father, Eric, and the foundation of a lifelong passion for the fishery was laid. Alvin’s close attention to detail and constant hard work established him as a respected figure in the industry and local community. Alvin was a member of the Canadian Coast Guard for 30 years.
Those who knew Alvin knew that every bit of his hard work – every scar, every ache, and every day spent at sea, was undertaken for the benefit, well-being and love of his family. Of all he accomplished during his life, nothing outshone the pride he felt for his girls. For his wife, Christine, and daughters Amber-Lynn and Taylor, there was no effort that Alvin was unwilling to make, and no hardship he was unwilling to endure.
Alvin is remembered for his love of a laugh, and was known for his quick wit and characteristic dry sense of humor.
Go Leaf’s go.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
A celebration of Alvin’s life will be held at Faith United Church in Thornlea at 2:00 pm on Thursday, August 18th, 2022.
Visitation will be open for family from 2:00-4:00 pm and to the public 5:00-8:00 pm on Wednesday, August 17th, 2022.

Wilson Elwood Callan

Wilson Elwood Callan
Oct 8, 1939 – Aug 13, 2022
It is with much love and broken hearts the family of Wilson Elwood Callan wish to announce his peaceful
passing at Carbonear General Hospital on the morning of Aug 13, 2022 after a brief illness at the age of
82. Predeceased by parents Fred and Pearl, parents in law Harold and Selina Smith, brothers Don and
Dolph. Leaving to mourn and celebrate his life his devoted wife of 57 years Ella; Children Jackie (Rick),
Janice and Jason (Jill); Grandsons Bradley (Ally), Dylan and Ryan; Sister Loretta (Sharon); Brothers in Law
Martin Smith, David Smith (Linda); nieces and nephews and a large circle of friends.
Wilson spent his life as an active builder of his community both in his professional career as a teacher (17
years) and MHA (13 years) and in his many volunteer activities. He was a founder of a number of the
institutions that have touched many of our lives. Helping to create the first town council of Norman’s Cove
– Long Cove, serving as mayor and councilor, Commanding officer of the 2903 Lions Army Cadet Corp,
President of the Trinity-Placentia Stadium Commission, board member of the Isthmus Area regional
Development Association and Trinity-Conception-Placentia Health Care Foundation. A lifelong member
and past president of the Norman’s Cove lions Club. He was also an active member of his faith community.
Serving on numerous church boards, singing in the choir and as a soloist and an active member of the
Bethel United men’s fellowship.
Wilson lived a long and fulfilling life; as he neared the end, he was ready to set aside his burdens and rest
in peace, content with the legacy he leaves behind. He was blessed to have been able to live in retirement
longer than his working career. After working for 30 years, he retired and spent the next 35 years
remaining active in his volunteer work; stepping aside from the town council and TCP health foundation
just last year; and enjoying his hobbies such as trouting, dancing with the Lancers dance group and
spending time in the woods. During their retirement Wilson and Ella spent many summer days camping
across the island and enjoyed many trips with their camper in tow to Lab City.
Every time we hear the iconic song “Music and Friends” we all remember Wilson with love as this was one
of his favorite songs and exemplified the things, he enjoyed the most.
Visitation will take place at Bethel United Church, Norman’s Cove – Long Cove on Monday 7pm to 9pm,
Tuesday 10am to noon, 2pm to 5pm and 7pm to 9pm.
